Supporting Authenticity and Identity in Challenging Times

When I learned about the recent restrictions and limitations surrounding gender identity, I felt an overwhelming wave of sadness. I thought about the countless individuals this change will impact—people who have already faced significant challenges simply for being themselves. It’s heartbreaking to see policies that disregard a person’s right to self-identify and live authentically.

No one knows you better than you. Yet, some believe they have the authority to define another person’s identity, dismissing their lived experiences. This is not only unjust but deeply harmful. The emotional toll of such setbacks is profound, and my heart aches for those who are affected.

The Impact of These Changes on Mental Health

For many in the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender and non-binary individuals, restrictions on gender identity can lead to increased anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. Research has consistently shown that affirming a person’s identity significantly improves mental health outcomes. When people are forced to suppress who they are or are denied access to necessary support and resources, the emotional distress can be overwhelming.

As a therapist, I have seen firsthand the power of acceptance. Feeling seen, heard, and validated can make a world of difference. This is why inclusive mental health care is so essential—it provides a safe space to process emotions, develop coping strategies, and strengthen self-compassion in the face of adversity.

You Are Not Alone—There Is Support

To those struggling in the face of these changes: Please know that you are not alone. There are still many who see you, support you, and believe in your right to be who you are. I am one of those people. As a therapist, I stand with you and affirm your identity. You deserve to be respected, valued, and safe.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reaching out for support can be a crucial step. Therapy can provide a safe and confidential space to explore your feelings, process your experiences, and develop tools to navigate these challenges. Seeking support—whether through mental health services, community organizations, or trusted loved ones—can be a lifeline during difficult times.

Ways to Prioritize Your Mental Health

In times of uncertainty and change, prioritizing your mental well-being is essential. Here are a few ways to take care of yourself:

  • Seek affirming support: Surround yourself with people who respect and validate your identity. Whether it's friends, family, or a support group, having a strong network can help you feel less alone.

  • Engage in self-care: Practices like mindfulness, journaling, exercise, or creative outlets can provide comfort and stability.

  • Limit exposure to harmful content: Constant exposure to distressing news can take a toll on mental health. Take breaks when needed.

  • Reach out for professional help: If you are struggling, therapy can offer valuable guidance and emotional support. Speaking with an affirming therapist can help you navigate feelings of anxiety, grief, or frustration.

  • Advocate when you can, rest when you need to: If you feel empowered to speak out against these changes, advocacy can be a meaningful way to channel your emotions. However, your well-being comes first—it’s okay to step back and focus on your healing.

You Matter, and You Deserve Support

No policy or restriction can take away who you are at your core. Your identity is valid, and your feelings are real. If you need support, please reach out. Whether through therapy, community organizations, or safe spaces where you feel affirmed, you deserve care and compassion.

If you’re looking for a therapist who provides a safe and nonjudgmental space, I am here to help. I offer telehealth therapy for adults in Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Indiana, and Ohio, and I am committed to supporting you as you navigate life’s challenges.
